Waxed Cotton Jackets
Waxed Cotton Jackets
British-Made Outerwear in Exceptional Natural Materials
Our waxed cotton jackets are made entirely by us in the UK, using only the finest materials available. Every jacket begins with exceptional two-ply long-staple cotton sourced from Halley Stevensons of Scotland — a mill internationally respected for producing the world’s finest waxed fabrics.
Unlike most waxed jackets, where only the outer shell offers protection, both the outer fabric and the lining of our jackets are made from waterproof cotton. This creates a rare double-layered natural barrier against the elements, while remaining breathable and comfortable in wear.
The waxed cotton we use is woven from USA-grown long-staple cotton, spun as a two-ply yarn using finer counts than are typically found in waxed outerwear. This produces a denser, stronger, and more compact weave, giving the jacket a noticeably better drape, improved durability, and significantly enhanced water resistance. It also allows the fabric to age more beautifully, developing character without losing structure.
Many waxed jackets on the market use single-ply yarns, chosen primarily for cost. Our decision has always been different: to use the best available fabric, even when it is more expensive to source and work with.
The lining fabric, also supplied by Halley Stevensons, follows the same principles of finer yarns and tighter weave. It acts as a second natural weather barrier, making these jackets among the most weather-protective waxed cotton garments available — without membranes or synthetic coatings.
Each jacket is finished with carefully chosen details: tweed trims from Lovat Mill or Harris Tweed, leather from Tanneries Pechdo in France, and a heavyweight two-way brass zip (size 10) — stronger and more durable than the lighter zips commonly used elsewhere.
These are waxed cotton jackets made without compromise: natural, robust, quietly refined, and designed to be worn hard, repaired if needed, and kept for years rather than seasons.
Why Two-Ply Waxed Cotton Matters
Most waxed cotton jackets are made using single-ply yarns, chosen primarily because they are cheaper and quicker to produce. While serviceable, they lack the strength, density, and longevity of more carefully constructed cloth.
Our waxed jackets are made from two-ply long-staple cotton, spun from finer yarn counts and woven into a tighter, more compact structure. This produces a fabric that is noticeably stronger, more water-resistant, and better draping, while remaining supple and comfortable to wear.
The tighter weave also allows the wax to sit more evenly within the cloth, improving weather protection and helping the fabric age gracefully rather than break down. Combined with a waterproof cotton lining, this creates a rare double-layered natural system — protective, breathable, and built to last.
It is a more expensive and demanding fabric to work with, but one chosen deliberately for those who value performance, longevity, and craftsmanship over compromise.
