Our Loden jackets are made from authentic Austrian Loden, a fabric with a long and respected history in alpine and country outerwear.

True Loden is woven from 80 % wool and 20 % alpaca, then densely milled and gently felted using a time-honoured process that enhances the cloth’s natural properties. The result is a fabric that is warm, breathable, quietly weather-resistant, and exceptionally durable — all without coatings or synthetic membranes.

We source our Loden exclusively from Leichtfried of Austria, widely regarded as one of the finest producers of this cloth in the world. Their Himalaya Loden has a distinctive depth, softness, and fluidity that improves with wear, making it ideal for jackets designed to be worn often and kept for years.

Each Loden jacket is handmade in England, cut and assembled with careful attention to proportion, movement, and longevity. These are not decorative pieces or seasonal statements, but practical, enduring garments that balance heritage fabric with refined modern tailoring.

What Is Loden?

Loden is a traditional alpine cloth developed over centuries in Austria and Bavaria, originally worn by farmers, foresters, and mountain communities who needed reliable protection from cold, wind, and rain.

Authentic Loden is woven from wool — often blended with alpaca — then densely milled and gently felted. This process tightens the fibres, creating a fabric that is naturally warm, breathable, and quietly weather-resistant without the need for coatings or synthetic membranes.

Unlike modern technical fabrics, Loden remains soft, silent, and fluid in movement, making it exceptionally comfortable to wear for long periods. It also improves with age, developing character rather than wearing out.
