The Marly – Double Ventile® Waxed Cotton Jacket
A Rare Construction. A Personal Origin. A Jacket Unlike Any Other.
The Marly is not simply another waxed jacket. It represents something genuinely rare in modern outerwear — a garment constructed from two full layers of Ventile® cotton, with the outer layer hand-waxed by us after production.
To our knowledge, we are the only brand offering Ventile® in a waxed cotton format, and certainly the only one using a full double Ventile construction.
The outer layer is made from waxed Ventile® cotton, while the inner layer is a second layer of unwaxed Ventile® cotton. This creates a jacket that is:
-
Naturally windproof
-
Highly water resistant
-
Breathable
-
Exceptionally durable
-
Entirely natural fibre
Unlike factory-applied wax finishes, the Marly is produced first and then hand-waxed by us, ensuring a deeper, more even, and longer-lasting wax coating. The result is a finish that ages beautifully and performs better over time.
The jacket is available in all 20 Ventile colours, allowing you to choose from a wide palette of refined, understated tones.
A Jacket with History
The Marly is named in quiet tribute to a French brand from the 1960s to the 1990s — L’Esquimau — a company that, in many ways, planted the original seed of English Utopia. Our founder, Gary, worked for them in the 1990s, learning his trade. The Marly carries that lineage forward — not as nostalgia, but as continuity of craft and philosophy.
Thoughtful Construction & Detail
This is a jacket designed around real utility:
-
Two large lower pockets
-
Two moleskin lined handwarmer pockets
-
Adouble-opening internal game pocket with zip access
-
Deep, practical storage without unnecessary bulk
The collar is trimmed in a beautiful, soft moleskin as standard, offering comfort against the neck. However, alternative collar options are available in:
-
Leather
-
Melton wool
-
Nubuck suede
As with all our garments, the Marly is made entirely by us in our workshop in England, cut and assembled individually.
Why This Jacket Is Different
Most waxed jackets use single-layer waxed cotton, often with synthetic linings. The Marly uses:
-
Double Ventile® construction
-
Hand-applied wax
-
No synthetic membranes
-
No shortcuts
It is more breathable than most wax coats, and constructed to be worn hard and kept for decades.
The Marly is not a fashion interpretation of heritage.
It is a continuation of it.

What Is Double Ventile® Construction?
Ventile is a densely woven 100% cotton fabric originally developed for extreme conditions. When exposed to moisture, the fibres swell, creating a natural barrier against wind and rain while remaining breathable.
The Marly uses two complete layers of Ventile®:
-
Outer layer: waxed Ventile®
-
Inner layer: unwaxed Ventile®
This dual-layer system significantly increases weather resistance while maintaining comfort and breathability. Unlike synthetic waterproof systems, Double Ventile® remains quiet, flexible, and entirely natural.
It is a rare and costly construction — used only when performance and longevity are prioritised over price.
Hand-Waxing vs Factory Waxing
Most waxed jackets are waxed at the mill before construction. This often results in uneven coverage once seams are stitched and fabric is handled.
The Marly is different.
We first construct the jacket in full, then hand-apply the wax ourselves. This allows:
-
Deeper wax penetration
-
More even coverage across seams and stress points
-
Longer-lasting protection
-
Better ageing and patina development
Hand-waxing is slower and more labour-intensive — but it produces a noticeably superior finish.
Care & Ageing Guidance — Waxed Ventile®
Waxed Ventile® is designed to evolve.
-
Allow the jacket to dry naturally if wet
-
Do not machine wash or dry clean
-
Sponge clean when needed
-
Re-wax periodically (we recommend every 1–2 years depending on use)
-
Store on a wide hanger to maintain structure
Over time, the wax will soften and the fabric will develop a subtle patina unique to you. This is not wear — it is character.
The jacket will improve, not deteriorate.
