The Eric Smith is our interpretation of the classic military mac — inspired by the generous, functional trench coats worn by Belgian soldiers in the 1950s. These garments were built for movement, protection, and authority, and that same clarity of purpose defines this design.

The coat is named after Eric Smith, the extraordinary teacher who introduced me to European vintage outerwear more than 30 years ago while I was learning design and pattern cutting. His depth of knowledge and respect for historical construction continues to inform the way we approach garments today.

Fabric & Construction

The Eric Smith is cut from a traditional Italian canvas drill by Olmetex — a cloth chosen for its structure, durability, and refined surface. The coat is unlined for clean drape and ease of layering, yet fully waterproof. The contrast interior reveals the technical coating that provides protection from wind and rain.

This balance of structure and lightness gives the mac a distinctive presence — substantial without heaviness, protective without stiffness.

Proportion & Wear

Cut with generous ease, the Eric Smith is designed to move. It layers effortlessly over tailoring or knitwear and carries the quiet authority of true military outerwear without theatrical excess.

Every Eric Smith mac is cut and made entirely by us. Because we control the process from first pattern to final construction, considered modifications are always possible.
