Unlined French Work Jacket
A Timeless Jacket Rooted in Craft and Everyday Utility
This unlined French work jacket is inspired by a style worn for more than a century by French artisans and agricultural workers — a garment valued for its simplicity, durability, and ease of movement.
Originally designed as everyday working clothing, the appeal of the French work jacket lies in its honesty. It is uncomplicated, practical, and comfortable — the kind of jacket you reach for when you’re simply getting on with things. That same quality makes it just as relevant today, whether worn casually, layered over knitwear, or used as a light jacket for everyday wear.
While the design remains faithful to its origins, our approach to making it is deliberately elevated. As with all our garments, we produce this jacket entirely ourselves in our workshop, located in the heart of the York. Here, traditional pattern cutting and careful construction meet a quieter, more considered way of making.
The fabric is a high-end two-ply Egyptian long-staple cotton, woven exclusively for us by Halley Stevensons in Dundee, Scotland. This cloth offers a noticeably superior handle and durability compared to standard cottons, with a weight and structure that suits the jacket’s utilitarian roots while feeling unmistakably refined.
The jacket is unlined, allowing the quality of the cotton to be fully appreciated and making it comfortable across seasons. It wears easily, softens with use, and develops character rather than wearing out.
Because we make everything ourselves, we’re happy to offer a high degree of flexibility. If you’d like adjustments to sleeve length, chest, or body length, that’s no problem at all. We can even modify details or add elements, such as a leather collar, should you wish. And of course, the jacket can also be purchased exactly as it is — because we believe it’s a great-looking piece in its own right.
This is a jacket defined not by fashion, but by function, longevity, and thoughtful making — a modern expression of a working garment that has stood the test of time.

A timeless jacket made to be worn, not preserved
The French work jacket — often known as a veste de travail — emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as everyday clothing for artisans, labourers, and agricultural workers. Designed to be durable, comfortable, and easy to repair, it was worn daily by carpenters, metalworkers, farmers, and factory hands across France and adopted as the SNCF uniforme du jour (actually in the colour as the main pic)
Typically cut from sturdy cotton and left unlined, the jacket prioritised freedom of movement and practicality over decoration. Large pockets held tools and personal items, while the simple construction allowed the garment to be produced, altered, and maintained locally.
Over time, the French work jacket became valued not just for its utility but for its quiet, honest aesthetic — a piece of clothing shaped entirely by use. Today, it is appreciated as a timeless design: functional, understated, and enduring, with roots firmly planted in real working life rather than fashion trends.
